Icelandic director Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson wins Febiofest Grand Prix with Heartstone

The winner of the 24th edition of the International Film Festival Prague – Febiofest is the Icelandic-Danish drama Heartstone directed by 35-year-old Reykjavik native Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson. The empathetic and confidently unrestrained debut about friendship and growing up takes place against the melancholic backdrop of Iceland. The director will receive the festival’s Grand Prix in person at Friday’s closing ceremony, which brings the Prague programme of this year’s edition to an end. Director and musician Emir Kusturica will be presented with the Kristián award at the closing ceremony at the CineStar Praha – Anděl cinema.

The film Heartstone picked up prizes at festivals in Chicago, Thessaloniki and Warsaw last year. Febiofest’s Grand Prix comes with EUR 5,000 for the director and EUR 5,000 for a potential Czech distributor. The picture Heartstone is set in a remote fishing village where a summer that will change the lives of the bored local teens is getting underway. Thor and Christian are best friends. One suffers at the hands of his sisters and from the fact girls think he looks like a little boy. The other’s father is constantly drunk while he experiences feelings that he is worried may recur. The 33-member jury headed by director Juraj Herz agreed that Heartstone was substantially more sensitive than the other films in the competition. “Heartstone has a story that you can identify with, get involved with and agree with,” added Juraj Herz.
